BIM ISO 19650: A Practical Guide to Information Management on Real Projects

ISO 19650 is often reduced to "BIM in the cloud". It is much more: a full information-management framework that governs how a project's information is produced, exchanged, verified and archived.

Start with the OIR, AIR, PIR and EIR

These four requirements documents drive everything downstream. Skipping them turns your CDE into a glorified file share.

The CDE is a process, not a product

Any tool can host a Common Data Environment — the value is in the WIP → Shared → Published → Archive workflow and the approval gates between them.

BEP: pre-appointment vs post-appointment

Your pre-appointment BEP wins the work. Your post-appointment BEP delivers it. Keep them versioned and reviewed monthly.

Common failure patterns

  • No LOIN matrix, so models are over- or under-modelled.
  • Coordination clashes reported but never closed.
  • Handover data missing asset attributes required for O&M.
