Claude AI in Planning, Scheduling and Cost Control: A Playbook for Planners

Planners are drowning in reporting and re-baselining. Claude can carry a huge share of the load without touching your source of truth in Primavera or MS Project.

Start with a clear system of record

Keep your schedule in P6 or MSP. Use Claude only to draft, review and narrate — never as the schedule itself.

WBS and activity drafting

Give Claude the scope and constraints; ask for a WBS to level 4 with activity codes and calendar assumptions to import.

Logic and constraint review

Export the schedule to CSV and ask Claude to spot open ends, redundant constraints, negative float and lag abuse.

EVM forecasting

Feed BCWS, BCWP and ACWP each period; ask Claude to compute CPI, SPI, EAC and TCPI, then write the narrative.

Narrative reporting

Turn dry variance tables into an executive story: what changed, why, what we're doing about it, and what we need from leadership.

Risk-adjusted scenarios

Describe two or three risk scenarios and get their impact on the completion date and cost forecast in a structured table.

Standard-compliant delay narratives

Draft delay analyses aligned to SCL or AACE protocols with correct terminology.

Recommended course

Our Claude AI in Project Planning, Scheduling & Cost Controlling course walks through each of these patterns with downloadable prompt templates.
