PMP Certification Cost in 2026 — Full Breakdown (Exam, Training & Renewal)

The honest answer to "how much does the PMP certification cost?" is between $550 and $1,100 for most candidates — and the gap between those two numbers is almost entirely decisions you control.

1. PMI membership — $149

$139 annual membership plus a $10 one-time joining fee. It is optional, but it immediately pays for itself because it cuts $170 off the exam fee and gives you the PMBOK Guide digitally at no extra cost.

2. Exam fee — $405 or $575

$405 for PMI members, $575 for non-members. Joining first therefore costs you $149 and saves you $170 — a net saving before you count the free standards library.

3. The 35 contact hours — $15 to $2,000

This is where budgets explode. Classroom bootcamps charge $1,500–$2,500. A complete self-paced video course that issues the same 35 PDUs costs a fraction of that and lets you rewatch every module during your final revision week.

4. Mock exams — optional but decisive

Candidates who fail almost always did too few full-length timed mocks. Budget for at least 1,000 scenario questions; this is the single highest-return line item in the whole plan.

5. Retake fees — $275 members / $375 non-members

Two retakes are allowed in a one-year eligibility window. Passing first time is the cheapest strategy available.

6. Renewal — 60 PDUs every 3 years

The renewal fee is $60 for members and $150 for non-members. PDUs themselves can be earned free through webinars and volunteering.

The cheapest legitimate route

  • Join PMI: $149
  • Take a self-paced 35-PDU prep course
  • Sit the exam as a member: $405
  • Pass first time — no retake fee
