PMP vs CAPM in 2026: Which Certification Should You Take First?

Both credentials come from PMI, but they serve very different career stages. Here is how to choose without wasting a year of effort.

Eligibility at a glance

  • CAPM — high-school + 23 hours of PM education. No experience required.
  • PMP — 36 months of leading projects (with a degree) plus 35 hours of PM education.

Exam depth

CAPM tests knowledge of PMBOK and the Agile Practice Guide. PMP tests judgement in scenario-based situations across predictive, agile and hybrid delivery.

Career impact

PMP moves salary bands and unlocks senior roles. CAPM opens doors for junior PMs, coordinators and analysts, and dramatically improves your PMP readiness later.

Our recommendation

If you have < 3 years of PM experience, start with CAPM this quarter and target PMP within 18 months.
